Craig McKenzie- ‘Making Space’

As a young man, Craig McKenzie trained as a woodturner in Mudgee, NSW, quickly becoming adept with the tools and learning to recognise and work with various types of wood.

Craig loves timber, its look, form and smell and how each engages the senses. He is careful to source it responsibly using fallen branches or timber from trees that have needed to be cleared.

Unlike many other forms of art, timber is tactile; it wants to be touched. Perhaps that is why form is so important to Craig, because that is often what draws someone to a piece and remains long after the timber itself may have aged and darkened.

Craig’s work has been exhibited in various locations around the Northern Beaches, where he lives, and in Country New South Wales.

In this exhibition at Gallery 109 , Craig is collaborating with his partner Concetta McKenzie.
