DALLAS LESLEY

ABOUT THE ARTIST: Twice a finalist in the Sulman Prize and exhibited in the Archibald, Wynne & Sulman Exhibition at the Art Gallery of NSW, Dallas’ works have been exhibited in Australia, Hong Kong, China, Fiji, and the USA. She has been a selected finalist in several art prize exhibitions around Australia, including  the Fleurieu Art Prize, the Percival Portrait Prize, the Blake Prize Director’s Cut and the ANL Maritime Art Prize amongst others.

In the Opalescence Series, Dallas engaged new materials and techniques in her evolving use of texture, and this series is her inimitable interpretation of the way in which she sees the iridescent layers of the coasts and shoreline, and the crystalline elements of the sea.

The Paradise Wings Series was first exhibited when selected as a finalist in the Sulman Prize Exhibition at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 2014. Dallas says ” My body of work is about birds, from their symbolism in history, the Dreamtime and mythology, to the way in which they make up the natural habitat of a place and become part of the chemistry of the landscape. When walking in the bush, the sound of birds is the first thing that I notice, bringing a sense of place. Even with my eyes closed I can feel their movements around me.”
